The 70th Intel International Science and Engineering Fair Closed—Shanghai Team Triumph Again

On May 17th local time, the 70th Intel International Science and Engineering Fair(Intel ISEF) was successfully concluded in Phoenix, Arizona. 1800 young science and technology enthusiasts from 80 countries and regions around the world took part in the event. These young people were shortlisted for the finals after excelling in the 420 joint events held around the globe, which included the Chinese team combined by 28 middle school students from 10 provinces and cities. The event also attracted more than 50 scientific research institutions, government departments, social organizations and enterprises from around the world to set up special awards. Children and Youth Science Center of China Association for Science and Technology was one of the awards setting units from mainland China.

Chinese players won awards in many categories. Shicheng Hu, a Shanghai contestant, won the first award in the energy: chemical category and the best of category award. In addition, she won the Dudley R. Herschbach SIYSS Award and was invited to watch the 2019 Nobel Prize ceremony on site. This is the second time for Shanghai team to win this award on behalf of China and also the first time that a female student in mainland China has won this award.

Through several rounds of selection, seven players of Shanghai team participated in the fair with 7 projects. All the players were 2018-2019 senior members of Shanghai Science Association for Young Talents, and were trained here for up to half a year. They were respectively Shicheng Hu, Hongjia Yang, Qingyi Wang, Zihao Huang, Shiqi Yang, Yumeng Cheng and Peiru Xu.

The Chinese delegation won a best-of-category award, a second award, two third awards, three fourth awards and four special awards. Nine contestants won 13 awards in total. Besides, Macao players made their best performance over the years by winning one third award, one fourth award and one special award.; Hong Kong players won one third award; Taiwan players won two second awards, five third awards and one fourth award. Above all, Shanghai team made outstanding achievements.
